About

My name is Xiurong Yu, and I am a Junior at the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology. Computer science, medicine, and tennis are my passions. I am highly involved in my school community through the Student Government Organization, Red Cross club, and other leadership initiatives at my school. Outside of school, I am a part of the Sponsors of Educational Opportunity program (SEO), a rigorous, year-round academic program supporting low-income student college readiness.

What I’m Raising Money For

The money I raise will my support my summer travel abroad program in Spain. This summer, I will be stepping out of my comfort zone in a foreign environment. I will be taking Spanish language and interacting with native Spanish speakers, living with a host family, and working with with local children. This will allow me to experience a new culture, enhance my Spanish speaking skills, and exercise my independence. As a member of SEO, this money will support students like myself meeting the financial requirement for attending an Enrichment Program like traveling abroad.

Why You Should Give

As a student who is passionate about learning a different culture and having a glimpse of what the world is like beyond my home city, this opportunity will be a life-changing experience. Not only I will be having a cultural immersion in a foreign country, but the skills I’ve learned will also help me give back in my future career. For instance, if I were to be in the medical or technology field, being able to communicate in Spanish is desirable in the job market because America is very diverse. This will allow me to interact with a broader community with people from different backgrounds. Being the first in my family to go to college, I deeply value this travel abroad experience because it will prepare me for the college environment I will be in 2 years where I must learn how to become independent. Your support will help students gain the opportunity that they could have never gotten before.
