About
My name is Derek, and I am a junior at the NYC iSchool. I participate as captain of my high school basketball team, Vice President of a culture club outside of school, and an active member of my economics class : Debt and Disaster. Outside of school I also participate in "Sponsors of Educational Opportunity", which not only provides me with academic support, but to grow personally through an upcoming summer enrichment program.
What I’m Raising Money For
The money raised will help support my participation in a Caribbean summer immersion program, in which I will set off in a live-able scuba and sailing voyage. I will sail 500- nautical miles across the Caribbean, earning multiple international yacht training sailing certifications and hiking through the Caribbean's most spectacular ecosystems.
Why You Should Give
By the end of the journey I will have the skills necessary to take the helm, and the certifications to prove it. The program will not only teach me sailing but will also teach me lessons in team work, responsibility, and discipline as I plot my own path and take charge of the boat with my new found leadership skills. The new experiences in skills I earned I will build a foundation for all future adventures; whether academic, personal, or experiential.
