About

Hello, my name is Aboubacar Sylla, but my friends and family call me Abou for short. I am 16 years old. My friends would describe me as competitive, funny, caring, smart, adventurous, and curious. This is because I am always asking questions to further my knowledge of the world. I am a junior at Manhattan Business Academy. I have great interest in music, games, and reading. I like to keep myself busy through a variety of activities and programs such as Black and Latino Student Task Force and SEO Scholars, which is an academic program that helps NYC public high school students get to and through college.

What I’m Raising Money For

This summer while many of my friends will be hanging out and playing video games, I will be taking full advantage of my summer by participating in an enrichment program through SEO Scholars. This will help get me out of my comfort zone, gain independence, develop my leadership skills, and better prepare me for college. I’m waiting on an acceptance for a summer opportunity, and your money will ensure that I have the funds available once I received the acceptance letter.

Why You Should Give

During this trip, I will work first-hand with one of the most endangered species of the Mediterranean, the loggerhead turtle. I'll camp near the beach—within walking distance of the waves and wildlife—as I protect, study, and educate the community about loggerhead turtles. During my free time, I will venture into nearby villages, visit ancient ruins, and learn about Greek culture from local experts.

I want to be the first in my family to go to college. By going on this program, I can strengthen my college essay to ensure a better chance of getting into the school of my choice. This is my opportunity to challenge myself and dedicate my summer to making a difference in the world.
