About
My name is Pamela Picon, and I am currently a junior at The High School for Health Professions and Human Services. Ever since I was in elementary school, science has always been one of my greatest passions; however, I never thought that it would be something I considered pursuing a career in. During my 10th grade of high school, I had the opportunity to enroll in a medical assisting program through my school where students are taught anatomy and physiology extensively. Through my first year of being in the program, I knew that the medical field was the right path for me. On weekends, I volunteer at my local hospital, and during the week I attend programs related to cardiology. Aside from the medical/science activities, I am also part of SEO Scholars, which is an eight-year program that focuses on helping underprivileged public high school students to and through college. Being part of this great community has helped me enhance my education and value the opportunities given to me.
What I’m Raising Money For
This summer I will be going away to St.Louis, Missouri for three weeks where I will have the opportunity to study at a competitive university. While being there, I will be part of the Pre-Medical Institute where I will be able to participate in lectures and hands-on activities. Aside from this, I will also be taking a biomedical ethics class, which focuses on the examination of the moral issues that arise out of medical practice and experimentation. The funds earned will help for tuition, dorming, and other expenses related to the pre-medical institute program.
Why You Should Give
Being a young woman alone is difficult; however, being a woman in the medical field can be very challenging when trying to compete against male partners. Through this summer experience, not only will I be able to explore new topics, but also help with overcoming gender obstacles in the medical field. This one in a lifetime experience will help me gain new life experiences such as independence, and interacting with students from all over the country, which will help me further my growth both as a student and aspring cardiologist.
