About
Hello, and welcome to my fundraiser page! My name is Geisha, I'm 16 years old, and I go to Central Park East High School. When I was a freshman in high school, I joined SEO Scholars. It's a free eight-year, rigorous, academic program that gets me and other low-income public high school students to college and through college.
I attend Saturday Academy throughout the school year to sharpen my skills in reading, writing, grammar, and math. I also attend a session every weekday with my peers to add on to our English and Math instruction. Over the summer, I go to Summer Academy to get a head start for everything I'll learn during the coming school year.
By the time I graduate high school, I'll have had about a year and a half of supplemental instruction in Math and two and a half years of supplemental instruction in English.
So far, 100% of SEO Scholars have been accepted to four-year colleges, and in 2019, my class will continue on this legacy.
What I’m Raising Money For
Right now, I am a junior, and this is the most difficult, yet exciting year in my SEO journey. This summer, instead of attending Summer Academy, I am looking to participate in an Enrichment Program. In this program I'll be able to live on a college campus, take college-level courses, receive college credit, and experience college life before I go to college. I'm looking to take a writing class to improve the skills I've learning for the past three years, and I want to take a cultural anthropology class to help me understand the differences between people and how to appreciate them anyway. Furthermore, I want to interact with professors and learn to be on my own which I've never done before.
Your contribution will cover the cost of transportation, textbooks, room and board, tuition, etc.
Why You Should Give
Although SEO Scholars is a free program, the Enrichment Program is not. Students like me are in SEO because we can't afford to take extra classes or tutoring in the summer or on the weekends, so we definitely can't afford to go on these amazing, yet expensive programs.
I want to be able to take advantage of this great opportunity because I think it can change my life. I am a first-generation student, so I don't have an example to follow. Many first-generation students like me who can get into college, don't graduate in time, or they don't graduate at all. I want to finish college, but in order to prepare myself I have to familiarize myself with it. Talking about college, watching videos about college, nor visiting a college campus beats actually attending college. I have the chance to do this before I actually enroll in college the fall or 2019, and I want to take it.
I'm motivated to better myself because I know I have the potential to do so. When I put my mind and effort into something, I've seen that I can achieve great things. In a matter of a few months I've been able to improve my SAT score by 410 points--from 1030 to a 1440--and my next goal is a 1500.
Students like me, who have potential, drive, talent, and discipline, shouldn't be denied life-changing opportunities to flourish simply because they don't have enough money. If you agree with me, then you'll help me fundraise by donating or spreading the word.
