About
Hello. My name is Oumy Souané and I am a junior at The Beacon School. Aside from reading, dancing, and fencing, I love studying French and have been taking French classes in school since my freshman year. Speaking other languages is so important to me because it allows me to connect with many people of different cultures. I am also a scholar in The Sponsors For Educational Opportunities, a program dedicated to providing high-achieving minority students with the best educational opportunities in and beyond high school.
What I’m Raising Money For
This summer, I received the amazing opportunity to travel to France for 4 weeks in a language and culture immersion program. There, I will be able to ameliorate my French-speaking skills and be able to enrich my worldview through meeting new people that are vastly different from me and, building connections with them that transcend our geographical and cultural differences.
Why You Should Give
Having grown up in Senegal, West Africa, French was the principal language I spoke throughout all my educational career there and, it allowed me to communicate with my family members. In 2010, I came to America and shifted my focus from French to trying to learn English. Learning English for me has been a bittersweet experience. Whereas I now am fluent in English, I neglected practicing my French since then, and that resulted in me forgetting the beautiful language I grew up speaking. That sense of loss and regret that came with me forgetting French is one that takes hold of me every day. This program will allow me to not only reclaim that lost part of myself, but it will also allow me to connect with new people and to gain a whole new perspective on life as I travel to new, cool places. Donations will aid me and other SEO scholars in paying the expenses of our enrichment programs and will ensure we all have unforgettable summers!
