About
Hi, I am Justin Desprebiteres. I am a first-generation, Hispanic-Latino, who was born in Queens, lived in Miami, lives in the Bronx, and goes to school in Manhattan and Brooklyn. All my life I have been pushed to do my best in school despite the emotional and economical hurdles that my family and I have faced. Academically, science and history fascinate me because there's something about learning about the past that can help us with solutions for the future as well as learning how everything in the world is connected. I aspire to be a Doctor or an Engineer because I want to be apart of an ever-changing field that can impact the world. I am currently in SEO Scholars, an eight year academic program whose goal is to close the achievement gap for underrepresented students across all the five boroughs in New York City. SEO has helped me tremendously improve in school with its difficult and rigorous curriculum as well as it’s tight-knit community. They have helped get opportunities like a pre-college program last year in upstate New York, and now with this travel abroad program.
Hola, me llamo Justin Desprebiteres. Soy un hispano-latino de primera generación, que nació en Queens, vivía en Miami, vive en el Bronx y va a la escuela en Manhattan y Brooklyn. Toda mi vida me han enseñado a dar lo mejor de mí en la escuela a pesar de los obstáculos emocionales y económicos que mi familia y yo hemos enfrentado. Académicamente, la ciencia y la historia me fascinan porque hay algo acerca de aprender sobre el pasado que puede ayudarnos con las soluciones para el futuro y también aprender cómo se conecta todo en el mundo. Aspiro a ser Doctor o Ingeniero porque quiero ser parte de una carrera en constante cambio que puede impactar el mundo. Hoy en dia estoy en SEO Scholars, un programa académico de ocho años cuyo objetivo es cerrar la brecha de logros para estudiantes con poca representación en los cinco condados de la ciudad de Nueva York. SEO me ha ayudado enormemente a mejorar en la escuela con su currículo difícil y riguroso, así como su comunidad unida. Han ayudado a obtener oportunidades como un programa preuniversitario el año pasado en el estado de Nueva York, y ahora con este programa de viajes al extranjero.
What I’m Raising Money For
I am fundraising for the amazing opportunity to travel abroad to New Zealand this summer to learn about the Maori culture and the indigenous rights of the people while exploring the surrounding environment. The goal of this trip is to immerse myself within this culture and build a bridge to connect that culture with my own. I will be traveling across New Zealand with the program learning about the aspects of the country and staying with a host family. Being a first-generation american, I have always been told stories about how it was immigrating to the United States from my family and from my friends and teachers. I have never left the United States, thus, it would be an amazing chance to get to learn about the lifestyle of the Maori people and teach them about my life in New York City. This first-hand experience could help me broaden my knowledge about the world so that when I begin my life in the real world as an adult, I can use the different points of view that I have gained to solve problems or help improve communities. I was nominated by SEO for this program because of my academic performance, and determination to learn as much as possible. Lastly, I am fundraising to give back to the SEO community for allowing me to go on this expensive endeavor and help my friends travel too.
Estoy recaudando fondos para la increíble oportunidad de viajar al extranjero a Nueva Zelanda este verano para aprender sobre la cultura maorí y los derechos indígenas de las personas mientras exploro el entorno. El objetivo de este viaje es sumergirme dentro de esta cultura y construir un puente para conectar esa cultura con la mía. Estaré viajando por Nueva Zelanda con el programa aprendiendo sobre los aspectos del país y quedándome con una familia anfitriona. Siendo un estadounidense de primera generación, siempre me han contado historias sobre cómo han emigrado a los Estados Unidos mi familia, mis amigos, y mis profesores. Nunca he salido de los Estados Unidos, por lo tanto, sería una oportunidad increíble de aprender sobre el estilo de vida de los maoríes y enseñarles sobre mi vida en la ciudad de Nueva York. Esta experiencia de primera mano podría ayudarme a ampliar mi conocimiento sobre el mundo para que cuando empiece mi vida en el mundo real como adulto, pueda utilizar los diferentes puntos de vista que he adquirido para resolver problemas o ayudar a mejorar las comunidades. Fui nominado por SEO para este programa debido a mi rendimiento académico y la determinación de aprender tanto como sea posible. Por último, estoy recaudando fondos para retribuir a la comunidad de SEO por permitirme realizar este costoso esfuerzo y ayudar a mis amigos a viajar también.

Donating will give you the satisfaction of helping an ambitious hard-working student achieve his desire to travel to another country and his goal to leave a long-lasting impact on the world. Traveling abroad has been a dream of mine and this program will help broaden my perspective and educate me about a different culture; ultimately, aiding in my goal to give back to my community. Through hard work and dedication I have made the most of the cards that I have been dealt. I have spent the past few summers, studying and going to school. This trip will give me something completely different. I am ready to make the most of this trip and take full advantage of this completely breathtaking opportunity.This fundraising account is to help not only provide me with the opportunity to travel abroad this summer but as well as help provide the same opportunity to friends and peers of mine, this year and the years following. SEO says that “It is not about you, it is about those who came before you and those who come after you.” This means that what you do, reflects your community, your family, and your life, and provides those who are coming after you with more opportunities to help improve the world. I can't wait to go on this trip!
Donar le dará la satisfacción de ayudar a un estudiante ambicioso y trabajador a lograr su deseo de viajar a otro país y su objetivo de dejar un impacto duradero en el mundo. Viajar al exterior ha sido un sueño mío y este programa ayudará a ampliar mi perspectiva y a educarme sobre una cultura diferente; en última instancia, ayudando en mi objetivo de retribuir a mi comunidad. A través del trabajo arduo y la dedicación, he logrado obtener mis metas. He pasado los últimos veranos estudiando e yendo a la escuela. Este viaje me dará algo completamente diferente. Estoy listo para aprovechar al máximo este viaje y esta oportunidad tan impresionante. Esta cuenta de recaudación de fondos es para ayudar no solo a brindarme la oportunidad de viajar al exterior este verano, sino también a brindar la misma oportunidad a mis amigos y compañeros, este año y los años siguientes. SEO dice que "No se trata de ti, se trata de los que vinieron antes que tú y los que vienen detrás de ti". Esto significa que lo que haces refleja tu comunidad, tu familia y tu vida, y beneficia a los que vienen después de ti con más oportunidades para ayudar a mejorar el mundo. Cuentos las horas!
