About

Hi, my name is Melvin Perez, and I am a junior at the Marble Hill School for International Studies. To keep myself busy, I attend Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO), an eight-year academic program that helps underserved students get to college, and I play football. I enjoy writing and watching sports, and I am very interested in pursuing a career in sports journalism or communications.

What I’m Raising Money For

This summer, SEO has given me the opportunity to participate in a travel abroad program in Brazil. While in Brazil, I will be submerged within the Brazilian culture and explore the Amazon Rainforest with people all over the world. But not only am I raising money for myself, I am also raising money for my peers in SEO who also need your help raising money so that they can participate in enrichment programs this summer as well!

Why You Should Give

As a minority, an opportunity like this is once in a lifetime, and it is not everyday that a student like myself has the opportunity to travel to Brazil and experience the world through a different lense. Because I live in New York City, I am constantly surrounded by jarring noises, traffic jams and concrete but travelling to Brazil this summer will help me gain confidence, bring me out of my comfort zone and teach me the value of independence. This will ultimately help make my transition from high school to college much easier.
