About

My name is Brayan Pichardo. I am a junior at Millennium Brooklyn High School. I was born in the Dominican Republic in a little town called Tamboril. I came to the U.S in 2012 to attend the P.S 1 not knowing any English. It was for this reason that I struggled through most of my classes, but after two years of handwork, I was able to fluently learn English. Coming to the United States without knowing English is my primary driver to getting immersed in different cultures and languages. From a young age, I knew that the way to a fairer and more peaceful world would be by getting myself immersed in a different culture that is entirely different from my mine. Being able to know where somebody comes from, what their views are, and what their values are crucial in human communication. It is important for me to these things because no real progress can be made in the world if people are constantly fighting against each other instead of understanding each other and coming to an agreement regardless of religion, color of skin, ethnicity, and place of origin.

What I’m Raising Money For

I am raising money to fund a 4-week enrichment program to Hungary where I will spend my summer at one the largest freshwater lakes in the world, Lake Balaton, for the first week. The last three weeks will be spent with a host family which will be my mentors guiding me to experience the Hungarian culture from the inside, living the life of a local teenager.

Why You Should Give

Your contribution will allow me the ability to travel to Hungary for four weeks. This opportunity will expose to a new culture. Cultural awareness is fundamental in human understanding and this will be the beginning of my journey to become a person that is able to completely put myself in the shoes of another person and see life through their eyes. Furthermore, this experience is not just about me, it is about those who came before me and those who came after me. I would be a role model for people, teaching them that they too should aim to become a person that is able to understand others people views.
