About
My name is William Velasquez, and I am currently a junior attending High School for Environmental Studies. Despite not being able to attend the best possible schools growing up, I have always been academically motivated to keep pushing myself towards success. I gain much satisfaction from working hard and watching it pay off because I know that I am not only making myself proud but as well as those who have made sacrifices for me. In addition to academics, I am also physically active with great interest in my health and well-being.
What I’m Raising Money For
The travel abroad program that I was nominated for is giving me the opportunity to travel to India where I will be volunteering to help the blind and autistic children. I will be working closely with the Blind Peoples Association (BPA) which works to provide educational and employment opportunities, equal rights, and higher quality of life for everyone. All funds that I receive will go to my flight, my stay in India, and to my peers in SEO who couldn't raise enough for their summer enrichment programs.
Why You Should Give
Being born and raised in East Harlem I have never truly been exposed to other cultures outside of neighborhood. I have grown up in poverty and in an underfunded setting and nowadays that is something that can really set back certain children academically compared to others. Being raised by a mother who was titled as an illegal immigrant and her having not finished high school I was really set back in the opportunities that other kids my age growing up had access to and so receiving any amount of money you're willing to donate will go a long way in helping me put a step forward not only for me and my family, but as well as many other students who have found themselves in similar situations as me.
