About
Greetings!
My name is Kiya Akintayo. I am currently a junior at Gotham Professional Arts Academy. I am a visual artist who aspires to be a comic creator. Using my laptop and collection of sketchbooks, I draw different characters that I see on T.V and in movies; I also create my own characters and stories too. Aside from school, I participate in PGC (Peer Group Connection), SEO (Sponsors for Education Opportunities), and College Now.
What I’m Raising Money For
I am trying to raise $400 or to help pay for my transportation costs and help fund the summer enrichment program that I'm participating in. This Global Prep program takes me to Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. Me and my group will stay with a chaperone in a dorm near the Ritsumeikan Keisho High School campus. During my two weeks abroad, I will have the chance to see some of the sights while learning the language from native speakers within Hokkaido's capital city, Sapporo. Finally, I will have the opportunity to collaborate with Japanese high school students on a joint project. Bringing together our unique cultural insights and shared experiences we will focus on a festival called Ritsumei-sai that the school holds in the summer.
Why You Should Give
My dream career is to be a comic book artist and start my own comic series. In my stories, I like to include representation of races and ethnicity other than my own in my characters. In the universe I create, I want to base different fictional societies and their ways of life on real cultures here and now. By traveling to another country and fully immersing myself in its culture, I will experience these lifestyles and gain new insights for my storytelling. Studying abroad will help me to achieve my goal by giving me the opportunity to gain a new appreciation for another culture and give me the inspiration for writing my own stories and creating the worlds that I have envisioned for my characters. As a result, I will be able to tell interesting and intricately multicultural stories that will entice readers of all different backgrounds to read my comics. I will also learn to communicate in person with those who might not have the same background as me, which is an essential skill for future success both in college and in any professional field. By going to Japan, my goal is to seek out inspiration, fully cultivate my creativity, and gain a broader perspective on how people around the world live and interact with their environment. This will also be my first time traveling to another country.
