About
Hi, my name is Oluwakemi (Kemi) Akinfenwa and I am a junior at H.S for Health Professions and Human Services. I go to a very health based school, so when I am not in school I like to spend my free time participating in programs that are outside of my schools STEM interest. I participate in an eight year nonprofit program known as S.E.O Scholars that takes underprivileged public school students and prepares them for the college experience providing intensive SAT classes and quality mentorship. I also attend another nonprofit called: ATLAS DIY IYPEP, in ATLAS I am a cofacilitator spending 5 hours every week either at meetings or in the IYPEP sessions leading know your rights workshops to teaching Peppers how to reach out to their community.
What I’m Raising Money For
This summer I have been granted the opportunity to spend six weeks in South Africa and Mozambique as apart of The Leadership Institute in EIL (The Experiment in International Living). The program focuses on leadership development and discuss critical global issues such as worldwide health, human rights, and social change. Participants are then provided with ways communities tackle these issues on an international scale. Thirty competitive students are chosen to be apart of the leadership institute and I am so happy to say I am one of these students.
Why You Should Give
Going to South Africa and Mozambique is an amazing opportunity that I am so excited to have been given. Not only will this be my first time traveling internationally but also my first time visiting my motherland.
This is an opportunity I feel like everyone should have access to especially low-income students all over the United States. Helping to fund my trip is a small way you can make a big difference and promote social exploration for a high school student who has always been interested in international affairs specifically in South Africa.
