About
My name is Gissel Ramirez and I am currently a junior at the New York City Museum School. Growing up in a family with parents that embody the American Dream, I am someone who has learned to value hard work and my education. I do not just value the education in the curriculum my school follows. I like to be enlightened about all types of people around the world. On my freetime, I read pieces of writing that explore social issues and science. In school, I am a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance Club where I love to be informed of the stories that, sometimes, the media fails to accurately capture. I also volunteer with a nonprofit organization named Ballet for All Kids. During this experience, I get to be in a room with kids with autism, anxiety, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. It is a dream to one day become a writer and produce pieces that shed light on these issues/ treatment of people. Also, as President of the Sustainability club at my school, I love caring for the planet and also reading, writing, and spending time on Pinterest.
What I’m Raising Money For
This summer I will be traveling to China where I will be staying with a host family and attending classes to learn Mandarin over the course of six weeks. Additionally, I will be participating in trips to further enrich my understanding of the Chinese culture and participate in volunteering activities. Your contributions will help fund the resources and tools I may need during these six weeks. The goal is to reach a total of $400. Any contribution or sharing of my profile would be greatly appreciated!
Why You Should Give
As someone who would like to study anthropology in addition to Journalism in college, I believe that this will be a good experience for me, as it can help me gain a better perspective of the world around me. Being in an environment that is extremely different from my own can provide exposure on how a certain societies live. At the same time, I will be giving back to the communities in Chengdu, while expanding my horizons. Also, it would assist me in becoming more independent and self-reliant. Growing up with older siblings has put me in an atmosphere where I depend a lot on someone else. It will push me to be self-sufficient, practice for college and my future career where I won’t always be around people like me. Lastly, this opportunity will help me practice a new language in an efficient way, which leads to better communication skills, helping one become a better candidate for future opportunities. Practicing a new language by speaking with a host family, doing activities in the city and being surrounded by people in a city that may only know the language I am going to study, will help me exercise it more.
