About

My name is Aneka Skeete, I’m a junior at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Brooklyn. Beyond being a student, I am the captain and founder of my high school step team called The Bodacious Steppers. In my personal time, I also tutor kindergarten and first grade students to help enhance their reading skills. In the future I do hope to become a speech pathologist for children. One thing I can’t live without is chicken, whether it’s fried, baked, or jerked.

What I’m Raising Money For

This year, I will be spending my summer abroad in Legon, Ghana. For two weeks I will be helping disadvantaged children in need through school and after school programs. Everyday I’ll be working NGO dedicated to bridging cultures and building relationships with at risk youth and children ages 4-15. When not working with children, I will be taking Twi language lessons to help with my daily interactions with Ghanaian people. This experience is important to me because I am very passionate about working with children, and I hope this experience will bring me closer to my goal of becoming a Speech Pathalogist.

Why You Should Give

Since I’ve never traveled abroad, I’m excited to participate in this program. Bringing back culture and values learned from this opportunity will help me grow immensely as a young woman. Not only will I learn about Ghanian culture, but I’ll be able to share my own culture as well. As one of three daughters, I’ve never experienced living independently without my family. I’ll also be able to step out of my comfort zone within this new environment, which will prepare me for college.
